How Assisted Stretching Can Improve Mobility and Movement

Daily activities can become more difficult when a joint has restricted movement. Assisted stretching may help improve mobility by supporting controlled movement through a joint’s available range of motion. Improved flexibility may also support better movement and overall mobility.

How Does Assisted Stretching Increase Mobility?

Assisted stretching may help improve mobility by supporting controlled movement through a person’s available range of motion. The practitioner provides support to help the individual move into a position that may otherwise be difficult to achieve.

Research suggests that stretching may help improve flexibility and range of motion. A systematic review done in 2024 with 77 studies showed that stretching exercises have made a difference for the range of motion; however, stretching cannot be seen as a solution to the problem.

What Happens in an Assisted Stretching Session?

During the session, the practitioner may help with moving the hip, shoulder, knee, or another joint. The amount of assistance can vary.

Applying the “three checks” approach can be useful: determine where movement is limited, find out whether the limitation seems to be muscular or joint-related, and do movements within the controlled range.

Can It Help With Joint Mobility?

Yes, professional assisted stretching may support joint mobility by improving the range around a joint. For example, guided hip movements may help someone practise positions needed for squatting, climbing stairs, or getting up from a chair.

The goal is not to force a joint farther than it should go. Good mobility means having enough usable movement for the activity you want to perform. This can make everyday movements feel more manageable.

How Can You Get Started?

Select movements that suit your goals instead of performing stretching evenly across the body. If you feel any tension or pain during any of the movements, it is wise to seek the advice of a specialist before continuing.

Practice assisted stretching geared towards mobility using a movement-oriented approach. Our goal at Clinic4sport is straightforward: to help with movement, making it easier and more efficient than before. Assisted stretching benefits can include opportunities to improve flexibility.
